Beauty is not skin deep: Transsexual Miss World

This morning, I was amazed when I read the news about the Transsexual Miss World held at Pattaya, Thailand.

Transsexuals from all over the world paraded their beauty and glamour at this special event held in order to increase awareness about transsexuals and hopefully, to decrease discrimination against the LGBT community.

Transsexuals and the rest of the LGBT community have experienced so much discrimination since probably the beginning of time. Laws withhold social and civil rights, social communities ignore if not discriminate and even parents turn their backs from their children as if being homo/transsexual is some kind of disease.

As a result, these people develop a poor sense of self, low self-esteem and suffer from lack of confidence in who they are. In an attempt to supress homosexuality because of social pressure, others suffer from internalized homophobia resulting to violence, depression and suicide.

International beauty pageants like this provide an opportunity for transsexuals to openly express themselves and be proud, not only of their sexuality but proud of themselves as a whole person. It's a celebration of their passion.

Contestants in the Transsexual Miss World are looking forward to a brighter future for the LGBT community.

Are you in favor of giving equal civil rights to members of the LGBT community?
